Pupils Create Peace Art for Bradford Urban Garden

Year 9 pupils from Challenge College, Bradford, took part in a workshop led by Bradford-based artist Zareena Bano at The Peace Museum on 9 February 2011. The workshop explored the graphic design, symbols and slogans used in peace campaigning posters from 1930 to the present day, drawing from the museum’s considerable collection of posters.  After viewing the museum’s campaign posters, pupils were tasked to design and create their own peace-related posters and banners in preparation for a Timeline Mural which the pupils later designed and created on the hoardings at Bradford Urban Garden, a temporary park covering part of the currently on-hold Westfield Shopping Centre site on Broadway.  The mural was unveiled on Wednesday, 30 March 2011. The workshop was part of a larger intergenerational project run by Bradford-based South Asian Arts organisation Kala Sangam, which is part of a “Communities Together” initiative led by COMEO – a consortia of partnership organistions with substantial experience of community engagement.  The project included a series of workshops in which participants explored the Past, Present and Future of Bradford’s diverse communities.
