Thanks for the Support at Undercliffe Cemetery WW1 Open Days
A massive thank you to everyone who came to speak to us about our ‘Stories in Stone’ project at the Undercliffe Cemetery ‘Listen to our stories’ open days (funded by HLF). Thanks to our event volunteers, Suhail, Zara and Asiya for their much appreciated help.Friday saw a huge turnout of over 200 pupils from Barkerend Primary School, Hanson School and Carlton Bolling College with poetry readings and choir performances. Barkerend Primary School worked with Shannen, our collections and education intern, to find out about red, white and purple poppies and then made their own. They also created memory leaves of images, key words and poems with Lauren, museum assistant, for the ‘Poetree’ to record what they had learnt or will remember about the day. Saturday and Sunday saw general members of the public drop by for guided tours of the cemetery to graves of soldiers and Conscientious Objectors, and they were treated to a performance telling the untold stories of WWI. If you missed it or want to find out more, the Yorkshire Standard and T&A ran articles about the days. Also visit ‘Stories in Stone’ page on the Choices Then and Now website for information about Shannen’s research into CO’s buried at Undercliffe Cemetery.
